How to Germinate White Sage

How to Germinate White Sage (Salvia apiana)
  • Sow White Sage seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date or directly outdoors in late spring.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press them down gently. Do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 70-85°F (21-29°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 14-21 days.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist during the germination period, but avoid waterlogging to prevent seed rot.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 18-24 inches apart in a sunny location.

  • White Sage thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil. It is naturally adapted to arid conditions.
  • Water sparingly once established, as White Sage is drought-tolerant. Overwatering can lead to root rot.
  • Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, control weeds, and protect the roots in colder climates.
  • Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and to prevent the plant from becoming leggy.
