How to Germinate Thyme

How to Germinate Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

  • Sow Thyme seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Sprinkle seeds on the surface of well-draining soil and press them down lightly. Do not cover the seeds, as they require light to germinate.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 65-70°F (18-21°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 14-28 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in a sunny location.

Additional Tips

  • Thyme thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining, sandy, or rocky soil. It can tolerate poor soil conditions but does not do well in waterlogged areas.
  • Water sparingly once established, as Thyme is drought-tolerant and prefers slightly dry soil conditions.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture, control weeds, and keep the roots cool in hot climates.
  • Harvest leaves as needed by snipping the stems. Regular harvesting promotes bushier growth and a more compact plant.
  • Prune Thyme regularly to prevent it from becoming woody and to encourage new growth.
