How to Germinate Swiss Chard Rainbow (Beta vulgaris)
  • Sow Swiss Chard Rainbow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or in late summer for a fall harvest.
  • Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in well-draining soil, spacing them 2-4 inches apart in rows that are 12-18 inches apart.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 50-75°F (10-24°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 7-14 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period, but avoid waterlogging to prevent seed rot.
  • Once seedlings are 3-4 inches tall, thin them to 6-12 inches apart to give each plant ample space to grow.

Additional Tips
  • Swiss Chard Rainbow prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist. Mulching around the base of the plants can help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Harvest outer leaves as needed when they are young and tender, allowing the inner leaves to continue growing for a prolonged harvest.
