How to Germinate Sea Buckthorn

How to Germinate Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides)
  • Soak Sea Buckthorn seeds in warm water for 24 hours before planting to soften the seed coat and promote germination.
  • Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors in early spring.
  • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil, either in seed trays or directly in the ground.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 3-6 weeks.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 3-6 feet apart.

  • Sea Buckthorn thrives in full sun and prefers sandy, well-draining soil. It can tolerate poor soils and is suitable for erosion control.
  • Water young plants regularly to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Sea Buckthorn is drought-tolerant and requires minimal watering.
  • Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and control weeds.
