How to Germinate Sage

How to Germinate Sage (Salvia officinalis)

  • Sow sage seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Use individual pots or seed trays for indoor planting.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 60-70°F (16-21°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 10-21 days.
  • Keep the soil lightly moist during the germination period but avoid overwatering to prevent seed rot.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 18-24 inches apart.

Additional Tips

  • Sage thrives in full sun and prefers well-draining, sandy, or loamy soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH.
  • Water sparingly once established, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, as sage is drought-tolerant.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture, control weeds, and keep the soil temperature regulated.
  • Prune sage regularly to encourage bushier growth and prevent it from becoming woody. Harvest leaves as needed, but avoid taking more than one-third of the plant at a time.
  • Sage is a perennial herb in many climates. Mulch heavily in colder regions to protect the roots over winter.
