How to Germinate Rosemary

How to Germinate Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

  • Sow rosemary seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Sprinkle seeds on the surface of a well-draining seed-starting mix and press them down lightly. Do not cover with soil, as they need light to germinate.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C) for optimal germination, which can take 14-28 days or longer.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or outdoors, spacing them 12-24 inches apart.

Additional Tips

  • Rosemary thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, ideally sandy or loamy with a slightly alkaline pH.
  • Water sparingly once established, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, as rosemary is drought-tolerant.
  • Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.
  • Prune regularly to encourage bushier growth and to maintain a manageable size.
  • Harvest rosemary leaves as needed, preferably in the morning for the best flavor and aroma. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the plant at a time.
