How to Germinate Rhubarb Victoria

How to Germinate Rhubarb Victoria (Rheum rhabarbarum)
  • Sow Rhubarb Victoria seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date.
  • Soak seeds in water for a few hours before planting to soften the seed coat and encourage germination.
  • Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix. Use individual pots or trays, spacing seeds 4-6 inches apart.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 60-75°F (16-24°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 10-21 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 3-4 feet apart in rows that are 4-6 feet apart.

  • Rhubarb prefers full sun and rich, well-draining soil. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Water regularly, especially during dry periods, to keep the soil moist and support healthy growth.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture, control weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
  • Do not harvest any stalks during the first year of growth. In the second year, harvest sparingly to allow the plant to establish.
  • Always avoid consuming the leaves of rhubarb, as they are toxic. Harvest only the stalks when they are thick and firm.
