How to Germinate Pumpkin Dills Atlantic Giant

How to Germinate Pumpkin Dills Atlantic Giant (Cucurbita maxima)

  • Sow Dills Atlantic Giant pumpkin seeds directly outdoors in late spring when the soil temperature has warmed to at least 70°F (21°C).
  • If starting indoors, plant seeds 3-4 weeks before the last expected frost date in individual pots.
  • Plant seeds 1-1.5 inches deep in rich, well-draining soil, spacing them 6-10 feet apart in rows that are 10-15 feet apart to accommodate their large size.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 70-90°F (21-32°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 7-10 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogging during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed 2-3 true leaves, thin them to the healthiest plants to provide enough space for growth.

Additional Tips

  • Dills Atlantic Giant pumpkins prefer full sun and soil that is rich in organic matter. Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting.
  • Water deeply and regularly, especially during flowering and fruit set, but avoid wetting the foliage to reduce the risk of disease.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
  • Fertilize with a high-phosphorus fertilizer when the vines start to grow, and switch to a high-potassium fertilizer when fruit begins to develop.
  • Harvest pumpkins when they reach their full size and the skin hardens, cutting the stem with a sharp knife, leaving a few inches of stem attached for longer storage.
