How to Germinate Mulberry Black

How to Germinate Mulberry Black (Morus nigra)

  • Sow Mulberry Black seeds in late fall or early spring, as they require a period of cold stratification for successful germination.
  • If starting indoors, stratify seeds by placing them in a moist medium (such as peat moss or sand) in the refrigerator for 60-90 days before planting.
  • After stratification, plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-draining soil in pots or seed trays.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 65-75°F (18-24°C) for optimal germination, which may take 4-6 weeks.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them to larger containers or directly outdoors, spacing them 15-20 feet apart for mature growth.

Additional Tips

  • Mulberry Black prefers full sun and well-draining soil. It can tolerate a variety of soil types, including loamy and sandy soils.
  • Water young trees regularly to establish a strong root system; once established, they are relatively drought-tolerant.
  • Apply mulch around the base of the tree to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weed growth.
  • Prune mulberry trees annually in late winter to remove dead or weak branches and maintain a manageable size.
  • Mulberries attract birds and other wildlife, so consider netting the trees if you want to protect the fruit harvest.
