How to Germinate Melon Charentais

How to Germinate Melon Charentais (Cucumis melo var. cantalupensis)
  • Sow Charentais melon seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors when the soil has warmed to at least 70°F (21°C).
  • Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. If sowing indoors, use seed-starting trays or small pots.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 75-85°F (24-29°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 7-10 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 18-24 inches apart in rows that are 4-6 feet apart.
  • If sowing directly outdoors, thin seedlings to the recommended spacing once they are a few inches tall.

Additional Tips
  • Charentais melons prefer full sun and well-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
  • Water consistently, keeping the soil evenly moist, especially during flowering and fruit development, but avoid wetting the leaves to reduce disease risk.
  • Apply mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and control weeds.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer every 2-3 weeks during the growing season to support healthy growth and fruiting.
  • Harvest when the melons emit a sweet fragrance and easily separate from the vine, indicating they are ripe.
