How to Germinate Lupin (Lupinus perennis)

How to Germinate Lupin (Lupinus perennis)

  • Soak Lupin seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to soften the seed coat and improve germination.
  • Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring or late fall, as they prefer cooler temperatures for germination.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-draining, slightly acidic soil. Lupins do not perform well in heavy, clay soils.
  • Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them about 12-18 inches apart.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist during the germination period, which usually takes 14-28 days.
  • If starting seeds indoors, plant them 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost and transplant them carefully to avoid disturbing their roots.

Additional Tips

  • Lupins prefer full sun but can tolerate partial shade, especially in hotter climates.
  • Water regularly during the growing season, but avoid waterlogging, as Lupins are sensitive to overly wet conditions.
  • Mulch around the plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
  • Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional blooming and prevent unwanted self-seeding.
  • Lupins can fix nitrogen in the soil, so they generally require little to no additional fertilization.
