How to Germinate English Lavender

How to Germinate English Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • Sow English Lavender seeds indoors 10-12 weeks before the last expected frost date for best results.
  • Place seeds in a moist paper towel, seal them in a plastic bag, and refrigerate for 3-4 weeks to stratify them and improve germination.
  • After stratification, plant seeds 1/8 inch deep in well-draining, sandy soil or a seed-starting mix.
  • Maintain a soil temperature of 65-70°F (18-21°C) for optimal germination, which typically takes 14-21 days.
  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period.
  • Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors in well-draining soil, spacing them 12-18 inches apart.

Additional Tips

  • English Lavender prefers full sun and well-draining, slightly alkaline soil with a pH of 6.5-7.5.
  • Water sparingly once the plants are established, as lavender is drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weed growth, but avoid over-mulching to prevent excessive moisture.
  • Prune lavender plants in early spring to remove dead stems and encourage new growth.
  • Harvest lavender flowers just before they fully open for the best fragrance and to encourage further blooming.
