How to Germinate Creeping Thyme

How to Germinate Creeping Thyme (Thymus serpyllum)

  • Sow Creeping Thyme seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost or directly outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Scatter seeds on the soil surface and press them down gently; do not cover with soil, as they need light to germinate.
  • Use a well-draining seed-starting mix and maintain a soil temperature of 60-70°F (16-21°C) for optimal germination.
  • Water lightly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged during the germination period, which typically takes 14-28 days.
  • Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them outdoors, spacing them 6-12 inches apart.
  • If starting indoors, harden off seedlings for a week before transplanting to help them adapt to outdoor conditions.

Additional Tips

  • Creeping Thyme prefers full sun and well-draining, sandy soil. It can tolerate poor soil conditions.
  • Water sparingly once established, as thyme is drought-tolerant and prefers dry conditions.
  • Apply mulch around the plants to retain moisture and prevent weed growth, but avoid over-mulching, as thyme dislikes overly wet soil.
  • Trim back plants after flowering to promote bushier growth and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Divide mature plants every few years to encourage healthy growth and prevent overcrowding.
